| Knee Arthroscopy Arthroscopy refers to a procedure in which a joint (arthro-) is viewed (-scopy) using a small camera. It allows an orthopaedic surgeon to diagnose and treat knee disorders by providing a clear view of the inside of the knee. With improvements of arthroscopes and higher resolution cameras, the procedure has become highly effective for both the accurate diagnosis and proper treatment of knee problems. Common treatments with knee arthroscopy include: * Removal or repair of torn meniscal cartilage * Reconstruction of a torn cruciate ligament * Trimming of torn pieces of articular cartilage * Removal of loose fragments of bone or cartilage * Removal of inflamed synovial tissu Unicondlyr Knee Replacement In some patients only one half of the knee joint is worn out and onl one side may be replaced after proper judgement. This process is called Unicondylar Knee Replacement. Dr Satosh Kumars protocol for Preparation for surgery * A detailed medical history is collected. * A detailed medical check up is done. * Patients taking oral medicines for diabetes are converted to insulin injections. I always ensure a strict sugar control before and after surgery. * I always rule out any source of infection like urinary infections, sore throat etc . and if any is found, postpone the surgery till the infection is cured. * The patient may need blood transfusion before surgery depending on pre- operative haemoglobin levels. Some patients prefer to donate their own blood a few days before the operation, which is transfused back to them on the day of the operation. * I amit the patent in the hospital two days beore surgery to enabe a proper work up before surgery. * I operate most people under epidural anesthesia where in my patient is awake and only the legs arenumbed. A fine tube is put in back through which complete pain relief is achieved after the operation too. Minimally Invasive Knee Replacement A recent advance in the performance of total knee replacement is the use of minimally invasive surgical approaches. This technique, still in its relative earlystages, is more challenging than standard total knee replacement. The incisions are approximately half the size of those used in a standard approach. The smaller incisions and new techniques to expose the joint may result in short-term advantages such as a quicker rehabilitation, less pain, and a shorter hospitalization, The minimally invasive approach to the total knee replacement is appropriate for non-obese patients who have reasonable motion without significant deformity. Hospitalization may be reduced among these patients, and the need for an extended stay for inpatient rehabilitation may be reduced or eliminated in most patients. Although some studies show shorter hospitalizations and rehabilitation periods, other studies find minimally invasive surgical techniques to be no better than standard techniques. Although the risks are not well known, they are probably comparable to those for a standard total knee replacement. You will have to discuss whether you are an appropriate candidate for this particular approach to total knee replacement. | |
